My voiceover story
As a voiceover artist, the most common question I get asked is “How did you get into that?”. So, I thought it would make sense for my website’s debut article to touch on some of the experiences that led me to this career.
MUSIC + AUDIO PRODUCTION
Crucially, my background is in music. My first ever job was as a singer in a three-piece indie folk band at the age of thirteen. We were fortunate to perform professionally at music festivals like Wilderness and Somersault, London bars like the Troubadour, a few Sofar Sounds gigs, weddings, pubs and more. This early exposure opened doors to recording studios and sound engineering. From Camden roundhouse to home studios, I learned from industry pros about acoustics, software, hardware and cross-industry collaboration.
ACTING + WRITING
Throughout my childhood and teens, I engaged in various acting environments, from Stagecoach and amateur drama to taking on leading roles in school plays. I then went to the University of Birmingham where I gained a First Class degree in English Literature and Creative Writing. This honed my writing, editing, and storytelling skills. I worked throughout university in various marketing positions: copywriting, editing, promoting live events and creating content for social media. After university, I was invited to play a leading role in a musical production but due to the pandemic, instead took a role at a PR company, where I learned the ropes of marketing and business.
VOICEOVER
During the first covid lockdowns is when I first took an interest in voiceover as a potential career; developing my understanding through videos and articles. This meant I was well prepared when asked to record a voiceover for a big brand campaign video while working as a Conceptual Creative role at marketing agency, Manifest Group. I soon became the agency’s go-to for voiceover work for brand films, including Tommee Tippee, Apple, Spotify, MSquared, and more.
PURSUING MY PASSION
Throughout this time, I had continuously written and produced my own music. Then, in June 2023 I took the leap to pursue my passion for music and quit my 9 to 6 corporate job. I put more time into my production skills, developing a deep understanding of Logic Pro and continued recording EPs with my producer and good friend, Teleman’s Pete Cattermoul. I now also work part-time at a guitar school in Stratford, perform live gigs, and MC for Sofar Sounds – where I regularly get to meet and learn from artists, producers, and sound technicians from all over the world.
CURRENT SET-UP + HOME STUDIO
Now that I’m freelance, I continuously invest in my own development, having completed various courses on voiceover work, frequently learning from others’ experience in the industry, researching how to improve, practising and honing my craft.
I have a best in class home studio, currently consisting of Logic Pro X, Izotope RX 10 Elements, a RODE NT1-A mic and pop shield, noise defender shield and further room treatment. Most of my kit can be transported and I’m able to travel anywhere in London to collaborate in studios. I can also work remotely, (collaborating via video call) meaning client location and country is not a barrier for collaboration.
